Getting started

Information you’ll need

See what information you’ll need for each version of the calculator.

Select a version of the calculator:

  • You’ll enter your investment information in two basic categories.
  • This version makes assumptions about your situation, including your retirement age and length, taxes, Social Security benefits, investment growth rates, inflation and raises.
  • You’ll be able to enter your investment information in 17 subcategories.
  • This version provides more customized results by allowing you to enter more details about your situation.

Indicate your marital status:

The calculator begins retirement for married couples when the first spouse retires. The working spouse’s salary will be treated as income earned in retirement. If you plan to retire in a different year than your spouse, consider running the detailed version of the calculator for each spouse separately, and indicate “Single.” If one spouse is already retired, run the detailed version of the calculator, and indicate “Single.”

Investments are not FDIC-insured, nor are they deposits of or guaranteed by a bank or any other entity, so they may lose value. Investors should carefully consider investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses. This and other important information is contained in the fund prospectuses and summary prospectuses, which can be obtained from a financial professional and should be read carefully before investing.

This calculator is for illustrative purposes only and is not intended to provide investment advice or portray actual investment results. Your financial situation and goals may change, so you might want to revisit the calculator at least once a year. Be sure to discuss your results with your financial professional.

The calculator does not take certain factors into account, including early withdrawal penalties, required minimum distributions and holding periods. Regular investing does not ensure a profit or protect against loss. Hypothetical annual rates of return are not intended to reflect actual results; your results may vary based on market conditions. The calculator compounds earnings annually and assumes that withdrawals are made at the beginning of the year.
